In what many are calling a dramatic political exposé, reports have emerged that the embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure, allegedly paid a secret visit to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, at his Abuja residence today. However, unknown to Abure, the former Rivers Governor had reportedly arranged for his media team and photographers to document the visit—a strategic move that now threatens to confirm long-held suspicions within the party and among political observers.
The visit, though unannounced, has quickly gained traction online after images surfaced, raising critical questions about the true political allegiance of Barrister Abure. For months, critics within and outside the Labour Party have accused him of being a mole—allegedly planted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Tinubu administration to weaken the party from within. This clandestine meeting could be the “smoking gun” many have been waiting for.
The Nigerian proverb, “Every day is for the thief, but one day is for the owner of the house,” aptly captures the mood among Labour Party loyalists who feel betrayed. They argue that while Abure has long insisted on his commitment to the party’s ideals, his actions, -ranging from controversial primaries to internal suppressions, -have consistently undermined the rising momentum the Labour Party gained in the 2023 elections under Peter Obi.
Abure’s leadership has been plagued by internal crisis, ranging from factional splits to accusations of mismanagement. Yet, despite these controversies, he has remained in position, largely shielded by court rulings and strategic silence from elements perceived to be sympathetic to the APC.
Nyesom Wike, who campaigned vigorously against the Labour Party during the 2023 presidential elections, has since been rewarded with a powerful ministerial post in the Tinubu administration. As FCT Minister, Wike has become a central figure in Tinubu’s power consolidation efforts, -often engaging in political realignments that blur party lines.
Wike’s relationship with opposition figures, -particularly those with strategic grassroots influence, -has sparked widespread speculation that he is building a network of “cross-party allies” for both federal dominance and state-level control, especially in Rivers and the South-South. This is not without precedent: during the build-up to the 2019 and 2023 elections, Wike’s political maneuvering often involved shifting alliances and unexpected endorsements, all designed to tilt the political balance in his favor.
Historical Precedents:
Nigeria’s political history is rife with examples of party infiltration and strategic sabotage. In the Second Republic, elements within the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) allegedly worked to divide and weaken the opposition Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) by sponsoring breakaway factions. Similarly, during the PDP’s years of dominance, there were well-documented efforts to plant loyalists in rival parties such as the ANPP and later CPC.
In 2014, the APC itself was born out of a strategic realignment and infiltration of opposition blocs—leading to the historic ousting of the PDP. So, it is not unprecedented for ruling parties to plant operatives or collaborate with insiders to destabilize rivals.
For many Peter Obi supporters and Labour Party insiders who have long suspected foul play, today’s development feels like a moment of vindication. If it is confirmed that Abure indeed met Wike in secret and was caught unaware by a planted media team, it raises urgent questions:
What was the purpose of the visit?
Is Abure coordinating with the Tinubu administration through Wike?
How long has this alleged alliance been in the making?
The Labour Party, which rose like a phoenix during the last general elections, now stands at a crossroads. If it fails to address internal betrayal and strategic infiltration, it risks becoming another footnote in Nigeria’s long history of opposition party collapse.
Leadership accountability, structural reform, and a recommitment to the ideals that energized millions of young Nigerians in 2023 must now become the party’s focus, -before the house is taken over from within.
